According to MacRumors.com, the 4-core MacBook Pro sporting Intel’s i5 and/or i7 mobile CPUs will be introduced this coming week.
These CPUs were introduced by Intel in January, code named Arrandale, and subsequently, every laptop manufacturer under the sun brought out products using these CPUs, except Apple.
Speculation on the street was that Apple’s engineering was tied up with the iPad. Apple had also previously opted for not implementing Intel’s first (well, technically second) 4-core mobile CPUs code named Clarksfield, introduced by Intel in September of 2009. That had CPU had a higher power consumption, and there seemed good reasons to wait for Arrandale instead.
This time, 3 months behind everyone else, with chip shortage rumors partly behind us, it looks like it is coming for real. Could not be a day sooner, as I had sold my 17″ Mac Book Pro in July, and then decided to wait for the 4-core which I thought was coming last September. After 9 months of wait, still waiting. Hopefully this wait will end on Tuesday, if that is indeed the day Apple introduces the new Mac Book Pros with the Arrandale CPUs.
The timing may also be related to stealing the limelight from Microsoft’s Pink phone introduction, also coming this week. The pissing match was already in progress with last week’s iPhone OS 4 preview, reminiscent of yesteryears’ Microsoft vaporware announcements. Well, may be that is not quite fair, as Apple did release the iPhone 4 SDK for real, but nevertheless, there was a bit of “what goes around comes around” kind of poetic justice in all of this.
