I have an earlier version of Fujitsu ScanSnap, S510M, and that thing takes a licking, and keeps on ticking, re-quoting an old Timex commercial.
It has been to a few different countries with me. I use it mostly for documents even though I have also scanned thousands of old pictures. While the photo quality is nowhere close to a good flatbed, its speed more than makes up for it. Once, I took it with me overseas as a carry-on, scanned my mom’s 1,200 old pictures in a day and a half, and brought it back. No can do with a flat bed.
As a side note, my old 110 volt Epson went through three separate power supplies when it was ‘accidentally’ plugged in to 220 volts in Italy. While that was purely operator error, S510M came with an international power supply that had no such issue.
